HUMILITY: GIVING UP THE RIGHT TO BE RIGHT

Introduction
So far in these studies on humility we have learned that humility means we do not seek recognition. Christ did not seek to be recognized. He came to do a job and He did it trusting the results to God His Father. We have also discussed we are not to place our self worth in things like our position, appearance or heritage and we certainly do not put our own self worth in who (aside from the Lord) accepts us or does not accept us. Also, humility means that we must be willing to do what it takes to get a job done. We should not have an attitude that we are above doing certain kinds of work - after all, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did the dirtiest work of all. This week's lesson will focus on verses 7-8 of Isaiah 53.

Personal Reflection
Think about your relationships with your spouse, family, friends or coworkers. How important is it for you to be perceived as right? Think about a time when you were blamed for doing something you did not do or you were misunderstood. How did you feel? What was your response?

Meditation and Memory Verse
(Take 15 minutes or more and pray about this prophesy of Jesus. Read it over several times. Repeat it out loud to yourself. Let your eyes gaze upon this verse. As you do so, ask God to give you greater understanding that you might know Him better. Finally, read, write and repeat the verse to help you retain it in your heart and mind.)

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth Isaiah 53:7

Bible Study
Read Isaiah 53:7-8, Philippians 2:5-7

In the New King James Version, verses 6-7 from Philippians reads "(Jesus) who, being in the form of God...made Himself of no reputation."

Who really deserves to be hung on a tree?

.

Read Matthew 26:69-74, 27:13, 17, 21-23, 26, 27-31. Write down from these passages the many ways in which Jesus was oppressed and afflicted.

.

How did Jesus respond to those who persecuted Him (Isaiah 53:7)?

.

Read Isaiah 53:8b, Romans 3:23 and identify for who's transgressions Jesus was stricken?

.

If we are really the guilty one's, from what did God spare us by punishing Christ in our place?

.

Read Romans 3:22. How do we receive the benefit of Christ's atonement?

.

Read Romans 3:24, 5:8. Other than believing Christ (accepting His substitutionary atonement for our sins), is there anything else that God requires of us to receive His forgiveness?

.

Christ gave up His right to be right when He died for our sins. He was the Righteous One, there was no sin in Him, yet He took upon His sinless body the sins of all mankind and the righteous wrath of His Father for the salvation of His people. How do we practically apply this principle of humility in our everyday life?

.

Personal Application
How does accepting Christ's work of atonement for your sins require you to demonstrate humility?

.

Think back to the personal reflection. In what ways have you refused to give up your right to be right? What was the result? How did you feel about it?

.

First Peter 2:23 states, "When they hurled insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly."

How did you believe the Lord is speaking to you through this study?

.

What adjustment is He asking you to make in your life with regard to humility?

.

Take these things to God in prayer
