HUMILITY: BEING WILLING TO DO THE DIRTY WORK

Introduction
This week we continue our study on humility from Isaiah 53. Last week we learned, as we studied Isaiah and related passages, that one aspect of Christ's humility was that of His outward appearance: His position in society, His education and His physical appearance were unremarkable. And in fact because He did not have the "proper credentials" some people rejected Him. James (the brother of Jesus) also warns us about playing favorites because of someone's socioeconomic status (James 2:1-5). God is not a respecter of persons and neither should we be. Nor should we place our value and self worth in things other than Christ.

This week we take a look at the work of Christ on our behalf.

Personal Reflection
In your place of work (employment, home, volunteer) what is your attitude about what you are willing to do and what you are not willing to do? How do you determine what it is you are willing to do? How do you feel when you are asked to do something that is not in your "job description"?

Meditation and Memory Verse
(Take 15 minutes or more and pray about this prophesy of Jesus. Read it over several times. Repeat it out loud to yourself. Let your eyes gaze upon this verse. As you do so, ask God to give you greater understanding that you might know Him better. Finally, read, write and repeat the verse to help you retain it in your heart and mind.)

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed Isaiah 53:5

Bible Study
Read Isaiah 53:4-6 along with Matthew 8:16-17, 1 Peter 2:24, and Hebrews 2:17-18, 4:15, 9:28. State all the different ways these passages explain how Jesus took up our infirmities and bore our sorrows.

Read Deuteronomy 21:22-23. In what way did God curse Christ on our behalf?

.

Who really deserves to be hung on a tree?

.

Read Romans 5:1, 6, 8-10. In what way did Jesus bring us peace with God? Is there peace with God apart from putting your faith in Christ?

.

Christ demonstrated immeasurable and incomprehensible humility when He laid down His life for His chosen people and took our iniquity upon Himself. He was punished for our sins. Christ did the work for us that we were unable to do for ourselves.

Personal Application
Read Romans 5:7. How does this scripture apply to you? What are you willing to sacrifice for others? Write out your own paraphrase for this verse as it might apply to you.

.

Read 1 Peter 2:13. Think back to the personal reflection. What if Christ had been unwilling to lay down His life for you? What should your attitude be about doing work that is "beneath" you or not in your "job description"?

How did you believe the Lord is speaking to you through this study?

.

What adjustment is He asking you to make in your life with regard to humility?

.

Take these things to God in prayer
