THE LOST FRUIT OF HUMILITY
by Jean LeStourgeon
Though humility is somewhat esoteric in practice, the rewards of humility are clearly stated in scripture: God will give the earth to the humble (Matthew 5:5), God guides the humble (Psalm 25:9), God sustains the humble (Psalm 147:6), God crowns the humble with salvation (Psalm 149:4), God gives grace to the humble (Proverbs 3:34), and God lifts up the humble (Luke 1:52). The rewards of the humble are great and are bestowed both in our present life as well as in the life hereafter.
The Need for Humility
Humility is the fruit that marked the life of Christ, yet today we hear little about the need and practical application of humility. Yet without humility we cannot truly accept the sacrifice of Christ on behalf of our sins. Without humility we cannot do the work that God has prepared in advance for us to do. Without humility we cannot be truly sanctified and conformed into the image of Christ.
What Humility is
Humility is an acknowledgement that we are nobodies, who have been made somebodies through the blood of Christ. Humility is an acknowledgement of our inability to do anything of value apart from Christ. Humility is an acknowledgement of our lack of righteousness apart from Christ. Until we understand these things we will continually attempt to mold ourselves into an image that is not of God's choosing. We will cling to the things of this world to find our value and our self worth instead of to Christ.
Christ's Humility
Love and humility brought Christ to earth to be fashioned into a sacrifice for sinful man. My mind cannot even begin to comprehend this concept. The One and only righteous God, through whom all of creation was made, made Himself nothing. He brought Himself lower that any human being could ever imagine. He left His majesty, gave up everything for a season. The King became a pauper. The One who was Holy became sin. The One who was glorious, became like His creation. The One whose name is above every name, became despised and rejected by those He came to save.
Lacking Humility
In many respects humility is the lost fruit amongst Christians. So often we are more concerned with our rights, than with Christ's righteousness. So often we feel that we have not been treated fairly, when our perfect, sinless Christ entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly. So often we open our mouths to defend ourselves, when our most innocent Jesus remained silent before His accusers.
