EXPERIENCING GOD
Henry Blackaby along with Claude King wrote Experiencing God: How to Live the Full Adventure of Knowing and Doing the Will of God as a 13-week interactive discipleship workbook for the Southern Baptist convention. When they developed the material they had no idea what a far-reaching impact it would have. It has sold over two million copies, crossed denominational lines and has been translated into 40 languages. What is the reason for such widespread acceptance of and interest in this book? Blackaby and King address the number one question of serious minded Christians: "How do I know what God wants me to do?" The authors' style is well organized, easy to read, scripturally sound and full of practical application. In addition to the textbook, there are multiple other complementary materials available: a workbook, a leader's guide, a personal journal, and videotapes to name a few.
For Christians who are asking the question "How do I know what God wants me to do?" or saying to themselves "I never hear God speaking to me," Experiencing God is a great place to begin to find solid Biblical answers to these life-altering questions.
This book is also recommended for those who already believe that they are in the center of God's will because the authors do a wonderful job of expounding on the theology of God's work. For example, one of the scriptural foundations of their book is John 5:17&19 where it is written Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." . . ."I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." Frequently, Christians are out there in the world initiating all kinds of activity, that we then turn around and ask the Lord to bless. Blackaby and King tell us we have it backwards. They tell us that God will direct us to where He is working. The next step for us is to trust Him, then adjust our lives to Him, and then walk in obedience with Him.
Because Blackaby is himself a pastor and has served in the ministry of missions for many years, pastors and other church leaders will relate to what he has to say and enjoy reading the many examples he uses from his own ministry experiences. Church leaders who read this book are likely to discover valuable guidelines for recognizing the activity of God in the midst of their own churches and gain greater confidence in leading God's people to do the will of God as a corporate body united in Christ.
Finally, the authors tell us that at the core of knowing and experiencing God is the reality that God is continually pursuing an intimate love relationship with each of us. They stress from the beginning to the end of the book that knowing and doing the will of God flows out of a deep and abiding love relationship with our Lord. Only then will we truly know the full adventure of doing His will.
If in your heart you long to know the power and presence of God in your life, to be more intimately involved with the Living God and to do His will, then Experiencing God will most certainly speak to your heart.
